Giving Back > Environment > Health > Community > Employees Green Power Baby Shower
In June, 2005, Earthbound Farm teamed up with longtime collaborators the Environmental Media Association (EMA) and the Children's Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC) to invite some of Hollywood's premier parents and kids to the first-ever Green Power Baby Shower. The event provided a unique opportunity to learn about raising children without exposing them to toxic chemicals. And it seems to have been a hit! Stories about the event and the celebrities who attended appeared in People and In Touch. EMA is a nonprofit organization that utilizes the entertainment industry to educate people about environmental issues. Earthbound Farm has sponsored the EMA Awards since 2000. CHEC is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about environmental toxins that affect children's health. Myra Goodman, co-founder of Earthbound Farm, serves as a member of the CHEC advisory board. The Green Power Baby Shower was held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, part of the greenest hotel chain in the world. The Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Green Partnership Program is considered the most comprehensive environmental program in the North American hotel industry for its water conservation, industrial composting, waste management, energy conservation, and community outreach. Other organic sponsors, such as SILK, Stonyfield Farm, and Whole Foods Market, helped make the event an enjoyable, educational, and environmentally friendly success. Throughout the day, celebrities such as Blythe Danner, Noah Wyle, Laura Dern, Demi Moore, and Ashton Kutcher were spotted munching on Earthbound Farm salads and snacks as they heard from several speakers, including: Dr. Allen Greene, Stanford University School of Medicine; Dr. Harvey Karp, UCLA School of Medicine; Bob Scowcroft, executive director of the Organic Farming Research Foundation; and Nancy Chuda, founder of CHEC. A memorable observation from Dr. Karp: "In 50 years, our children's children will look back on how we grow our food today and ask, ???You were really dumb enough to put that [toxic pesticides] on the stuff you ate?'"
By day's end, shower participants were lugging bags full of environmentally friendly cleaner, baby clothing, and Earthbound Farm carrots, apples, and raisins — along with heads full of reasons why the organic choice is so important. Did you know that???
