A Special Cause: Making Land Safe to Farm

Freedom Fields USA necklace

We’ve found a way to give a remarkable gift of hope to farm families thousands of miles away. When you buy a beautiful sterling silver Freedom Fields USA necklace, the money you spend clears a land mine from farmland in Cambodia. And another family can reclaim the means to feed themselves and rebuild their community.

Removing land mines from farmland changes everything. Farmers move onto the cleared land immediately to plant crops, dig wells for clean drinking water, and restore their community infrastructure — including schools and places for children to play — free from the fear of explosives.

These beautiful handcrafted sterling silver necklaces, shaped in a representation of a land mine and hung on a black leather cord, were designed by Pat Areias Sterling Jewelers. They make wonderful gifts — a gift of beauty for the recipient, and a gift of safe land for a farming family halfway around the world.

Freedom Fields USA is giving the farmland back to the villagers by clearing land mines and making the land safe. Farming is difficult enough, between battling weeds and pests, caring for crops, and hoping for favorable weather — no farmer should have to live with the fear of hidden explosives, too!

If you’re in the Monterey Bay area in California, you’ll find Freedom Fields necklaces at our Farm Stand in Carmel Valley. Or you can buy a Freedom Fields necklace online from wherever you are at www.ffusa.org/store.html. They’re $100, and that’s our cost — no one associated with this project is taking a profit. The entire purchase price goes directly to Freedom Fields USA. The proceeds from the sale of just one necklace will clear one landmine in Cambodia.

Freedom Fields USA is a Carmel-based nonprofit organization working with the HALO Trust, a nonpolitical, nonprofit organization registered in Britain and the US, to support de-mining operations in the northwestern region of Cambodia along the border with Thailand.

The task of removing thousands of land mines is daunting, but it’s being accomplished day by day, one mine at a time… one necklace at a time. This de-mining project in Cambodia has been in progress for about 2 years — and within the next 5-7 years, Freedom Fields hopes to make Cambodia “land mine-safe.” Find out more about Freedom Fields USA, buy a Freedom Fields necklace online, or get involved yourself at www.ffusa.org.
