Day 69: Tuesday, 5/5/09 At last, time for our “cut & come again” harvest! Mother Nature gave us cool, cloudy weather after the previous harvest, so our second growth took longer than we expected — but our little clamshell garden is finally ready. Farmer Mark wraps up the project with tips for encouraging slow growers, and ideas for what else you can grow in a clamshell garden.
Day 55: Tuesday, 4/21/09 Today we harvest another clamshell lettuce crop that’s been growing in a 1-pound clamshell container. And with the very warm weather we’ve had in Carmel Valley lately, the lettuce we harvested last week is coming back nicely; it could be ready for a second cutting in 7-14 more days.
Day 48: Tuesday, 4/14/09 Our first harvest day! After nearly 7 weeks, Farmer Mark is ready to harvest our beautiful baby lettuces. See his advice for knowing when the lettuces are ready (for “maximum yield”), how to cut them, and how to grow a second crop from the same plants. One of our organic lettuce seed packets (from our March promotion, about 300mg), growing in a 5-ounce clamshell container, yielded about 1.25 ounces of organic salad greens — a good-sized serving that was delicious dressed with just a little organic olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Day 41: Tuesday, 4/7/09 Our Clamshell Garden has been growing for almost 6 weeks, and Farmer Mark is almost — but not quite — ready to harvest those pretty baby greens. This week, he explains what it means when the tiny leaves near the soil line start turning yellow.
Day 34: Tuesday, 3/31/09 The lettuce seedlings in our Clamshell Garden are nearly 5 weeks old. Farmer Mark recommends some time outdoors, where air movement will help make the leaves a little thicker and more robust before harvest.
Day 27: Tuesday, 3/24/09 Our Clamshell Garden heirloom lettuce seedlings are almost 4 weeks old, and they’re really starting to look like salad! In this week’s progress report, Farmer Mark shows what a difference soil nutrients can make.
Day 20: Tuesday, 3/17/09 At about 3 weeks, our seedlings are still about 2 inches tall, but they’re beginning to show their true lettuce leaves. Watch Mark’s tips on watering, rotating, and providing organic nutrients to keep our little plants growing strong.
